What Has Changed in Home Battery Storage

What has actually changed

Battery marketing moves faster than battery technology. Four things have genuinely changed for a UK home, and they are all things you can check on a datasheet. Here they are, with the sources.

The cells are lithium iron phosphate

Home batteries used to come in several chemistries. The home products we fit use lithium iron phosphate, written as LiFePO4 or LFP.

You can see it on the datasheets for the two makes we fit. Anker lists LiFePO4 cells for the SOLIX X1. Fox ESS lists LiFePO4 prismatic cells for the ECS4800.

LFP holds slightly less energy for its size than the chemistry used in phones and cars. In a house that does not matter, because a battery sits in a garage rather than in your pocket. What LFP gives you instead is better thermal behaviour and a long cycle life.

Cycle life is now a published number

A cycle is one full charge and discharge. The Fox ESS ECS4800 datasheet quotes a cycle life of 6,000. That is measured at 25 degrees, at 90% depth of discharge, and at a 0.3C charge and discharge rate. Depth of discharge is how much of the stated capacity you can actually use.

Those conditions matter. A cycle life figure without its test conditions tells you nothing. Ask any installer for the datasheet, not the brochure.

Batteries are modular now

This is the change that matters most for the money. You no longer buy one fixed box.

Anker's SOLIX X1 uses 5 kWh battery modules. It scales from 5 kWh up to 180 kWh, with power output from 3 kW to 36 kW. Fox ESS builds the ECS4800 from stackable modules. Its smallest configuration is rated at 9,320 Wh, and it stacks to seven modules for 32,610 Wh.

So you can start at the size you actually need and add capacity later without replacing what you already have. That is a real change from a few years ago, when getting a bigger battery meant buying a bigger battery.

Round trip efficiency is published too

Round trip efficiency is the share of the power you put into a battery that you get back out. The rest is lost as heat.

Fox ESS quotes above 95% for the ECS4800 battery pack. Anker quotes up to 90.2% for the SOLIX X1 system as a whole. Those two numbers are not measuring the same thing, which is exactly why you should compare like with like. A pack figure and a whole system figure will never match.

Warranties have got longer

Manufacturers now publish warranties in years and in throughput, which is the total energy the battery is expected to pass in its life. Anker quotes a 10 year warranty on the SOLIX X1. The units we fit carry 10-year inverter and battery warranties.

A warranty is only worth what the company behind it is worth. Companies House currently lists GivEnergy Ltd, company number 11571089, with the status "In Administration". That is a well known British brand, and it is a reminder to look at the maker as well as the specification.

Smart tariffs are the real change

The biggest shift is not in the battery at all. It is in how you are billed.

The government's clean flexibility roadmap was published on 13 July 2026. It reports that Ofgem and Elexon had moved more than 11.3 million smart meters to half hourly settlement by mid June 2026. That is the plumbing behind tariffs that charge different prices at different times of day.

A battery on a tariff like that can fill up when power is cheap and run the house when it is expensive. That is worth more than a small gain in efficiency.

What is not here yet

Two things get talked about a lot and are not in UK homes at any scale.

Solid state batteries. The home products we fit all use liquid electrolyte LFP cells. We will write about solid state when there is a datasheet to link to.

Using your car to power your house. This is called vehicle to grid, or V2G. The government's clean flexibility roadmap describes work still going on to understand and remove the barriers to rolling it out at scale. So it is real, and it is not something to build a plan around this year.

What this means when you are choosing

Ask for six things, in this order:

  1. The datasheet, not the brochure.
  2. The cell chemistry and the cycle life, with its test conditions.
  3. The usable capacity, not just the nameplate figure.
  4. Whether you can add modules later, and at what cost.
  5. The warranty in years and in throughput, and who honours it.
  6. Whether the inverter suits the tariff you want to be on.

Common Questions

What battery chemistry is used in UK home batteries?

Lithium iron phosphate, written LiFePO4 or LFP, is the usual choice. We can speak for the two makes we fit. Anker lists LiFePO4 cells for the SOLIX X1 and Fox ESS lists LiFePO4 prismatic cells for the ECS4800.

How many years will a home battery last?

Look at the cycle life and the warranty rather than a number of years. The Fox ESS ECS4800 datasheet quotes 6,000 cycles at 90% depth of discharge. Anker quotes a 10 year warranty on the SOLIX X1.

Can I make my battery bigger later?

With a modular system, yes. The Anker SOLIX X1 adds 5 kWh modules and scales to 180 kWh. The Fox ESS ECS4800 stacks up to seven modules. Ask before you buy, because not every product works this way.

Can I use my electric car to power my house?

Not yet, in practice. Vehicle to grid works, but the government's own clean flexibility roadmap describes barriers still being worked through before it rolls out at scale. Do not buy a battery on the assumption your car will replace it.

Are solid state batteries worth waiting for?

No. The home batteries we fit all use liquid electrolyte LFP cells, and no solid state home product has a datasheet we can link to. Waiting for a product with no release date costs you the savings you would have made in the meantime.
