The National Park boundary runs through this part of East Sussex. Where a property is inside it, the South Downs National Park Authority is the planning authority, not the district or borough council. Its Planning Committee is the statutory planning authority for the Park.

The Authority says the General Permitted Development Order still allows microgeneration on homes, including solar panels, where the conditions in Part 14 are met. Its own advice note says sensitively designed roof top solar is likely to be suitable in most areas, and that making use of existing roof space is strongly encouraged. It also says several Part 14 rights do not apply to listed buildings or to land and buildings in their grounds, that there are restrictions relating to conservation areas, and that anyone affected should get tailored advice.

A National Park counts as article 2(3) land, so for a flat roof array you must first ask the Authority whether its prior approval is needed for how the panels will look, before work starts.
