Understanding Your Solar System
A complete residential solar PV system is made up of four main components, all of which we specify, supply, and install as part of your package.
Solar Panels
The power source
Monocrystalline silicon panels are the most efficient type available for residential use. The panels we fit on homes are rated at 450–500W each; commercial roofs take larger-format panels. A typical home installation uses between 8 and 20 panels, depending on roof size and energy demand. Panels carry up to a 30-year performance guarantee from the manufacturer, depending on the panel.

Inverter
The brain of the system
The inverter converts the DC electricity generated by your panels into 240V AC that your home appliances can use. A string inverter handles all panels together; a hybrid inverter additionally manages battery storage if you choose to add one now or in the future. Your solar panel fitter will specify the right inverter type for your property and usage profile.

Mounting System
The structural foundation
Panels are fixed to your roof using an engineered aluminium rail system bolted directly into your roof rafters. The mounting solution is specific to your roof type — pitched tile, slate, or flat roof — and is designed to be fully weatherproof for the lifetime of the system. No penetrations are left exposed.

Track your generation
Most inverters come with a companion smartphone app that shows live solar generation, home energy consumption, and export to the grid. You can track daily, monthly, and annual output and see exactly how much energy — and money — your panels are generating. We set this up and walk you through it on installation day.

Sizes assume 450W panels. Output uses the same figure as our solar calculator: 1,000 kWh a year for every kWp, on a south-facing roof with no shade. PVGIS gives about 1,156 kWh per kWp for a south-facing roof in Eastbourne, so treat the table as the cautious end. East or west facing roofs, and any shading, bring it down. Only the 4 kWp price band is a quoted figure; the other sizes depend on the roof, the scaffolding and the equipment, so we price them at survey.

Do I need to tell my home insurer about solar panels?
Yes. Panels count as part of the buildings
Yes, and tell them before the work starts. Your policy will say what you must tell them about. Aviva’s, for example, asks you to tell them before you alter the buildings, and panels on your roof are that kind of change, so check your own wording. Panels are fixed to the structure, so they belong to the buildings side of the policy rather than the contents side. That does not by itself mean yours are covered, so ask your insurer to confirm it.
Can I have solar panels on a flat or a leasehold house?
Usually only with the freeholder’s written consent
It depends on who owns the roof. In a block of flats the roof is not usually part of your flat. It normally belongs to the freeholder or the management company, and your lease is what says so. You need their written consent, and the lease has to allow the work. A leasehold house is the same question, and many leases require the freeholder’s consent there too. Sort the consent out before you ask anyone to quote.
