Solar Battery Storage Costs in the UK: 2025

Adding battery storage to a solar panel system is one of the most effective ways to maximise your solar investment. In 2025, home battery storage systems cost between £2,500 and £6,000, depending on capacity and brand. Crucially, battery storage now attracts 0% VAT — the same as solar panels — making them significantly cheaper than before 2022.

Solar Battery Storage Prices by Capacity

Battery CapacityPrice Range (Supply + Install)Best For
5 kWh£2,500 – £3,500Smaller homes, partial overnight storage
10 kWh£3,500 – £5,000Average 3–4 bed home, most overnight needs
15 kWh£5,000 – £7,500Larger homes, EV charging, energy independence
20 kWh+£7,500+Large homes, near off-grid goals

Leading Battery Brands We Install

Fox ESS

Fox ESS produces compact hybrid inverters with integrated battery support. Popular for their reliability and excellent app monitoring. Available in 5–20 kWh configurations. Competitive pricing with a 10-year warranty option.

Anker SOLIX

Anker's home battery range offers modular storage with a clean design and strong app integration. The SOLIX X1 is a popular choice for homes wanting 10–15 kWh of storage with good peak power output.

GivEnergy

GivEnergy is a UK-focused brand with excellent customer support and a well-regarded monitoring platform. Their batteries integrate well with time-of-use tariffs like Octopus Agile and are a favourite for EV owners.

Tesla Powerwall

The Powerwall is the most recognised home battery brand. The Powerwall 3 has an integrated inverter, 13.5 kWh capacity, and excellent build quality. Premium pricing (~£7,500–£9,000 installed) but an industry-leading warranty.

How Much Can Battery Storage Save You?

The key benefit of battery storage is increasing self-consumption — the proportion of your solar generation you actually use yourself, rather than exporting.

SetupSelf-Consumption RateAnnual Benefit (4kW system)
Solar only (no battery)30–40%~£580/year
Solar + 5 kWh battery55–65%~£750–£850/year
Solar + 10 kWh battery70–80%~£900–£1,100/year

With a smart time-of-use tariff (like Octopus Intelligent or Agile), batteries can also be charged cheaply overnight — often at 7–10p/kWh — and discharged during peak hours. This grid arbitrage can add a further £200–£400/year in savings.

Battery Storage Payback Period

For a 10 kWh battery added to an existing 4kW solar system:

  • Battery cost: ~£4,000
  • Additional annual benefit vs. solar-only: ~£400–£500/year
  • Payback: 8–10 years

When installed alongside new solar panels (rather than retrofitted), costs are lower and the combined system typically pays back in 9–11 years.

Is Battery Storage Without Solar Worth It?

Yes — if you're on a time-of-use tariff. A home battery charged exclusively from the grid at low overnight rates and discharged during expensive peak hours can save £300–£600/year depending on your tariff and usage. We install standalone battery systems as well as solar+battery combinations.

Can I Add Battery Storage to an Existing Solar System?

In most cases, yes. We can retrofit battery storage to most existing solar installations. The main consideration is inverter compatibility — some older string inverters require an AC-coupled battery, which adds cost. We assess your existing system during a free survey and recommend the most cost-effective solution.

0% VAT on Battery Storage

Since April 2022, residential battery storage systems attract zero VAT in the UK — whether installed standalone or alongside solar panels. This applies to the battery, inverter, and installation labour. The zero rating is confirmed until at least March 2027.
