A coastal installation is one close enough to the sea for salt air and wind exposure to shape the design. In East Sussex that covers a lot of homes, because the county is a long coastline with towns sitting right on it.
Solar works well here. The point of this article is not to warn you off. It is to explain the extra things we look at on a seafront roof, and why the survey takes those things seriously.

Common Misconceptions
"You cannot have solar near the sea." You can. We have published work in Bexhill, Hastings, St Leonards and Eastbourne.
"Salt air will destroy the panels in a few years." Modules are sealed glass units built for outdoor life. The makers publish decades long performance warranties.
"A seafront roof needs a special panel." What changes is the fixings, the exposed components, the cable routes and the access plan. The panel model usually does not.
"Wind means fewer panels." Not necessarily. It means the layout and the fixing detail are worked out for that roof rather than copied from another one.
"Sea mist ruins the output." Low cloud reduces output while it is there and then it clears. It is weather, not a fault.

The Bexhill job is 8 Jinko panels on a small roof with the smaller of the two battery sizes we fit most often. The 13 panel Hastings job used Aiko A475 panels. The customer described it as a slightly different installation that had to work from day one. The St Leonards job used 20 JA Solar panels and was designed to make comfortably more than the household uses.
The range there is the point. Coastal does not mean small. It means the design starts from the roof in front of us.
UK-Specific Considerations
Eastbourne, Hastings, St Leonards, Bexhill, Seaford and Newhaven all sit on or very near the sea. Pevensey Bay and Normans Bay are more exposed again.
Property types vary a lot along that stretch. Victorian and Edwardian terraces near the front in Eastbourne and St Leonards. Bungalows and dormer bungalows around Little Common and Cooden. Split roofs and chimneys on the Hastings slopes. Each of those changes the access plan more than it changes the panel choice.
Planning is handled by different councils along the coast. Eastbourne Borough Council covers Eastbourne. Rother District Council covers Bexhill and the Hastings fringe. Lewes District Council covers Seaford and Newhaven. Wealden District Council covers Polegate, Hailsham and the inland villages. Most roof mounted domestic solar is permitted development, but conservation areas and listed buildings are common along a seafront, and both are exceptions.

When This Isn't Right For You
A roof in poor condition should be dealt with before panels go on it, and that applies more strongly on an exposed elevation. Do not put a twenty five year system on a covering that has a few years left.
If your property is listed, roof mounted solar is outside permitted development and needs consent first.
Before You Spend Money
Ask whether the survey included the exposure of your roof, not just its size and direction.
Ask what fixings and components are being used on your roof, and confirm they are corrosion resistant.
Ask where the cables will run and how they will be protected.
Ask how the scaffolding will be put up, and whether the street needs any permission. On a narrow seafront road this is worth settling early.
Ask whether bird protection is being quoted, and whether you want it from day one.
Ask about conservation area status if you are near the front. Your council can confirm it.
